| Our first meeting of the new year was (I think) a great success. We had four new
members show up. Two have been on the FinMUG list for a while, but have never been
to a meeting and two just found out about us from another member. Welcome to all
of you. I hope we were able to help and hope to see you again. Of all the members that attended seven were working or retired educators. That is more than half in attendance! Maybe there is hope for our children yet! I showed up not feeling my best, but Lesley made vegetable beef soup and that made me feel better right away. Thanks Lesley, as usual your hospitality is greatly appreciated. (And so is your cooking) Tom did a short presentation on clip2gif You can find it at <http://macinfo.its.queensu.ca/MacSDistribution/Clip2Gif.html> It is a small 313K download. This small application if FREE and it does a nice job of converting your pictures to a smaller gif format, ready for internet use. Thanks Tom! Keep bringing you cool little FREE apps to show us. All through this meeting there were at least five or six small meetings going on. The noise level was deafening. I broke up the small meetings to take some pictures. Got everyone together for a group picture to send to ProVUE Development. They will be sending us software for each person in the photo. Here is a short description they gave me... Of course a QuickTime movie isn't really a substitute for a live, in-person visit. So in addition to the QuickTime movie, I'll send a free trial Panorama CD for EVERYONE in your group. The CD includes the software, all of the tutorials and documentation in PDF format, and over three hours of QuickTime video demos and training. The trial version of Panorama is a fully functional copy of our ultra fast RAM based database processor. Unlike most other trial software there is NO 30 day time limit, but there is a limit of 250 records per database. Within that limit the software is fully functional, including Panorama's full featured form layout editor, programming language, and lightning fast searching, sorting and data analysis tools. This makes it perfect for personal, educational and small business use – phone book, home inventory, wedding planning, student attendance & grades, personnel records, to-do lists, etc. –- this special user group trial version of Panorama is absolutely free for members of your group. After I took the pictures with our Olympus camera I did a presentation of iPhoto. iPhoto started up as soon as it sensed the compact flash card was inserted. Then we choose to delete the photos from the camera upon downloading. Made a folder for the group pictures and made a slideshow with music, cropped a photo, changed it to black and white, rotated it, made a storybook and showed the potential to make a webpage, order pictures from Kodak, a bound book from Apple and to export to QuickTime. This software is just awesome. It is available only for OS X. It is also FREE. You can download it from apple.com or it can be found on your iDisk. We also talked about the new iBook and iMac. I passed around the Time magazine with the iMac on the cover. Much of the side discussion was education related. The Watkins Glen Elementary schools have and AirPort lab set up and Elmira Southside has several Labs of Macs also. I'm sure we can have a good working relationship between the FinMUG and our schools. Well that is all for now. Our next scheduled meeting will be Saturday, February 9th, at 12:00 (lunch, bring your own) Official meeting will start at 12:30 - 2:30. Location is Bethany Center Community Room Building "E". Agenda to be announced. Submitted January 13, 2002 Kathy Holton |
