February 10th Meeting Highlights

By Kathy Holton

User Group Meeting Saturday, February 10, 2001

At the last minute we had a request for a demonstration on FTP (file transfer protocol) applications and how to use them. Michael had a great idea to set up an FTP server and have another computer there with an FTP client to connect to. I thought this was a great idea until, DJ (my son) told me at 8:30 am Saturday morning, “Oh Yeah, the Duke’s might not be able to come to the meeting.” So I scrambled to download an FTP Server I had no idea how to work, I found one called PageSentry 3.0, and installed it. I also, turned on the FTP Server on OS X, thinking, maybe this would work. After I got that working and was able to FTP a file from my PowerBook to the G3 I called Keith to make sure he brought his iBook. Surprise, surprise, he was not coming. Keith was going skiing with his daughter. Now I’m in real trouble. I have a Server and no computer to connect. Gene Nowlan to the rescue, he agreed to bring his PowerBook.

When we arrived at Bethany, Lesley had made a pot of Chile, Thanks Lesley; everyone enjoyed the hot meal along with whatever lunch they brought. Don and Jon especially enjoyed the Chile. While we ate we talked about my scrambling to get what I needed for the meeting, and the tax problems that have been in the paper concerning the new housing at Bethany. A short time after we started eating Jon and Michael Duke showed up with a whole network.

Michael starting setting up our network, with all the stuff brought by, the Dukes, the Holtons and Gene Nowlan, we had 2 hubs, 2 iBooks, 2 PowerBooks, 3 or 4 power strips and miscellaneous cabling. We had more than enough equipment for a small network. The iBooks and Gene’s PowerBook connected flawlessly and Gene was off and downloading from the server before I knew it. My PowerBook however, did not connect right away. Actually it never did get it to connect. I tried all during the meeting and we just couldn’t figure it out, until I read the hub, it was a 100BASE-T hub and my PowerBook is 10BASE-T, so they just were not compatible. Thankfully nothing was wrong with the PowerBook.

We talked briefly about iDisk and the benefits of using that instead of FTP. iDisk is provided by Apple, free of charge. They give OS9 users 20MB of Internet storage space and uses Apple’s File sharing which is much more “user friendly” than using FTP.

I hope everyone enjoyed the meeting. I certainly learned a few things. Thank you to Michael and Gene.

At the end of the meeting we decided on the next meeting date. It will be Saturday, March 10, 2001 @ 12:00 pm, Bethany. See you in March, and bring your lunch.
